Fri 5 Jul - Boston, MA

The day after the morning before. Quiet. Too hot. And Di was not well...

The plan for our last full day in the US this time around was to pick up our Greyhound bus tickets to Montreal for tomorrow and then do a walking tour of Harvard.

Now, things did not turn out that way in this oppressing heat. We walked to Boston's South Station from our hostel all right, a 20 minutes walk, and got our bus tickets after a bit of stuffing around. Apparently, we had booked our tickets way to early and our bus route number had since changed. Same departure time, same arrival time. Well, we got our tickets after some 20 minutes. Megabus beat Greyhound any day, no paper tickets, you just show the emailed ticket in your phone. Greyhound is very much paper based...

Di was not well (and the lack of sleep did not help) so we decided to cancel the Harvard walking tour. Sad to miss it, but the heat...

We then enjoyed our first stint on a local Boston bus from South Station...

We decided then to do the Swan Boats in the Boston Public Garden, very effortless and the park felt like an oasis. On the way to the pond, we noticed this rather unusual street name...

Di really really wanted to take a ride on the Swan Boats so we did and Hans accepted it had to be done as it is a Boston tradition. After all, it has been in service for a while...

This is how the Swan Boats look like...

And this is the "engine house"...

Not a self portrait, but a photo taken by a lady on the bench in front of us.

The little pond had lots of sea birds, ducks and ducklings, even a real white swan and then this guy...

The ride is a small circle going under the bridge after half the distance into another end of the pond, turning around and comimg back. We are approaching the end...

After the Swan Boats, we wandered back to 40 Berkely hostel and very little happened for the rest of today.

Di unfortunately developed an upset stomach (and some other nasty symptoms) and decided she could not cope without air conditioning so moved into a small hotel across the road. She then slept for several hours and Hans left her alone to recuperate.

Hans also had a nap but back in the oven... Sorry, hostel room. Then loitering in the lobby trying to keep cool.

Di left her hotel room only to go to 7/11. Dinner for her was crackers from 7/11 and Hans chose today's special in the hostel's basement, which was sweet and sour chicken with rice. Probably best described as "comfort food".

How about this heat... Good night from two locations.

Footnote: Some observations from 40 Berkley...

This place appears to primarily be a low income housing building supplemented with visitors as a hostel. If we can put it in such a way that there are some colorful characters living here, not in an agressive or junkie kind of way, more older people including some with visible deformities. Of course, the staff know and call the permanent residents by their first name. In addition to all this, there is a mezzanine level where space is provided for entrepreneurs who seem to be coming and going.

All these groups of people seem to get along very well and coexist.
